  • People with a general interest in wildlife, or whose lives are professionally entwined with wildlife and its conservation, will find this book interesting and challenging. At times humorous and witty, enhanced by cartoons that stroll into the "dark side" of conservation, the book has a very serious side. It provides compelling evidence that the pragmatic pursuit of wildlife conservation is often constrained politically, because resolving the diverse values attributed to wildlife by different players becomes more important than solving the conservation problem at hand.

The reader is taken on the author's journey of understanding, which started in the steamy swamps of northern Australia working with crocodiles. It eventually branched into many diverse wildlife conservation and sustainable use issues, and into the international global forums in which the rights of nations to manage their own living resources, for their own benefit, are won or lost on the basis of a few politically-charged votes.

The author uses knowledge and experience gained from over 40 years at the front line of wildlife conservation to explore the inner workings of wildlife conservation as he has experienced them. Many of the major international
species and thematic conservation battlegrounds are discussed, with frank assessment of their strengths and weaknesses.

Wildlife Conservation: In the Belly of the Beast provides important new insights into how wildlife conservation programs work and are influenced and shaped, not so much by objective scientific assessment, but rather by the prevailing short-term politics of the day.
