The unit will cover fatigue and failure theories and fracture mechanics and will review design of machine elements.
The unit covers a design exercise that involves designing a machine based on industry standards and design codes. The design exercise will take in to account safety, reliability and efficiency standards. The design exercise will cover costings through life-cycle analysis, fabrication methods and appropriate material selection. Factors such as maintainability, sustainability and human factors will be considered in depth. Appropriate documentation development and application of project management techniques will form part of the exercise.
This unit is reliant on on-line materials including electronic submission of assessment items. Students must have access to a reliable high-speed broadband connection and a scanner.
