PHA211 Fundamentals of Pharmaceutics

Fundamentals of Pharmaceutics is an integrated program of lectures, practicals and tutorials examining pharmaceutical dosage forms with respect to their

• Formulation;
• Manufacture;
• Stability and
• Effectiveness.

This unit introduces the concept of how the physicochemical properties of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) influence the formulation and manufacture of dose forms, while formulation and manufacture influence the stability and effectiveness of dose forms.
Appreciation of the fundamental concepts relevant to the formulation and manufacture of medicines, with a marked emphasis on pharmaceutical calculations, is contextualised through practical activities such as compounding semisolid and liquid dose forms, dispensing medicines and communicating pharmaceutical information.
