In this unit, which is team-taught by a native speaker of the target language and a linguist, students will learn a Central Australian language from two directions: 1) through developing aural and oral competence by means of structured conversations and immersion in the target language, and 2) through the holistic study of grammar in an on-going fashion. That is, grammatical concepts will be discussed as and when encountered, in the context of their function in real conversational exchanges. Students will begin to compile their own dictionaries, phrase-books and sets of grammatical notes. Students' initial language awareness and knowledge in the language taught will be taken into account.
