Story is an essential component of communication. This unit introduces students to the forms, functions and purposes of Indigenous and non-Indigenous short stories from Australia and elsewhere. They will examine the elements of plot, character and setting with a view to apply these elements to their own short stories. Drawing on examples from contemporary Indigenous Australia and other countries, students will explore how stories can impact on a reader's perspective. The writer's relationship with their audience is a core theme in this unit, to encourage consideration of potential audiences and how to reach them as a professional writer.
