The aim of this unit is to introduce students to the interrelationships among language, culture and society. It is designed to help students increase their awareness of the cultural embeddedness of language and its relation to identity, as well as of the social significance of language choice and language use. Moreover, the unit will cover major related issues, such as communicative competence, register, dialect, intercultural approaches, politics and society. The unit considers language use at both the level of the individual and the group, including the development of national language policy and other language planning initiatives.
