This unit deals with the various methodologies and techniques to solve engineering problems through computation as applied in contemporary practice of civil and mechanical engineering. It covers the following topics: roots of equations, numerical differentiation, difference tables, linear systems, numerical integration, differential equations; the use of application software (including but not limited to structural and finite element programs for stress); numeric computation and visualisation.
This unit is reliant on on-line materials including electronic submission of assessment items. Students must have access to a reliable high-speed broadband connection and a scanner.
