The aim of this unit is to provide students with an understanding of contemporary health promotion concepts and frameworks that will allow them to plan and implement a range of health promotion actions to promote good health and prevent illness. The priority action areas and principles of the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion and related documents from the World Health Organisation provide a basis for the unit. The key concepts of social determinants of health, collaboration, social inclusion, health equity and the importance of planning and evaluation are introduced. The theory and concepts presented in this unit support the development of health promotion competencies.
