This unit critically examines Indigenous people's responses to the processes of colonisation. Students explore the various ways in which Indigenous people express their continuing sovereignty over the Australian estate and the processes by which the differing conceptions of sovereignty and colonisation may be reconciled. Significant national developments in social, judicial and political history are examined to inform potential models for change. These models are evaluated for their ability to redress ongoing issues of sovereignty, and options for the future (including treaties) are explored.
