LAN102 Introduction to Language Studies

The unit provides an introduction to the nature and workings of languages as dynamic meaning making systems within particular cultures and societies. Taking the position that language learning is intrinsic to language use, it is particularly relevant to language learners and teachers as it proceeds systematically through key aspects of communicative competence, including shared cultural and other understandings, the purposeful and cohesive nature of discourse, meaningful patterns of grammar and wording, and the manifestation of languages in written and spoken forms. All basic concepts are illustrated in terms of their application to English and other languages taught at CDU, so that it is possible for students to also gain substantial background on one or more of these languages.
