In this unit, students will engage with issues relating to how languages change when they come into contact with one another. It will provide them with skills to identify and critically assess the positive and negative effects of language contact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages. By learning about the process of language change and loss due to cross-cultural interaction, students will develop critical understanding of the importance of documentation, analysis and education involving Indigenous language communities, including respect and acceptance of language mixing, language renewal and the use of different varieties of Aboriginal English and creole languages.
