This unit is designed to complement the previous study students have undertaken, which has provided them with the basic knowledge and understanding of pathology laboratories. In this unit students will participate in a broad range of test procedures that are performed to assist in the investigation, diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease in a rural setting. They will gain supervised professional experience in a medical research or pathology laboratory that is affiliated with the university. Students will also gain an understanding of the occupational health and safety issues and risk assessments required for a safe work environment. Students will explore the role and structure of a pathology laboratory in rural and remote Australia and gain an understanding of the isolation and the reduced staff, facilities and technologies that exist in such areas and the resources that are used to overcome such issues. They will also explore the dependent relationship these smaller laboratories have with major pathology laboratories and how they fit in the healthcare sector.
