The aim of this unit is provide students with the opportunity to gain nationally accredited contemporary mediation training, developing skills and gaining knowledge of mediation processes that assist them to resolve conflict and assist in negotiations about future decision making. Students learn to support participants in a mediation process to identify, clarify and explore issues, to generate and consider options and to make decisions about future actions and outcomes. Studies in this unit are based on the assumption that mediators come from diverse social and cultural backgrounds and disciplines and each brings with them valuable experience that can contribute to the learning process. This unit provides the opportunity for students to develop the skills and knowledge and practice what they have learned in a safe environment. Completion of this unit does not qualify students to practice as accredited mediators; students may wish to apply for accreditation as a mediator through a Recognised Mediation Authorising Body (RMAB) at a later stage.
