This unit aims to develop the knowledge and skills required to plan and implement a substantial research based project in the public health area, under the supervision of an experienced researcher. As the generation of new knowledge and the applicability of findings to the field are essential aspects of research, the topic should be current, relevant and attempt to fill identified gaps in the literature and/or practice.
Students will: select an appropriate research topic; critique current research and practice through analysis and articulation of the relevant literature; consider and utilise ethical research principles and processes; prepare a research proposal; select and apply best practice research principles and methods; and produce a thesis or alternative piece of writing which embodies the results of the research. The scope of the project needs to be appropriate to complete and write up the research within the designated time frame.
