The purpose of this unit is to assist students to develop effective reading strategies and encourage them to develop the 'habit of reading'. The students engage in an inquiry into Indigenous readers and writers as role models through a program of reading and discussion. During the workshops, students will identify their own reading patterns and reading goals and will practise successful strategies for reading challenging texts. Reading for enjoyment is encouraged by examining a range of text genres, reading Indigenous and mainstream writings, and discussing texts with Indigenous readers and writers to provide stimulus and new directions. Students also add to their learning plan through the development of a personal reading list.
