SVA103 Introductory Studio

This unit has been designed as an introduction to perceptual, cognitive and practical skills associated with the conventions of the visual arts. Workshops in different media: i.e drawing, painting, print-making, photography and mixed media will be complemented by conceptual approaches and experimental methods which cross the boundaries of studio media. Teaching and learning will occur through structured classes and workshops, set exercises and projects that are intended to encourage and develop students' ideas and imagery. Lectures, seminars and critiques will also occur throughout the semester to assist with the making of work and to discuss the theoretical and historical context in which contemporary art operates. Students are expected to use their imagination and originality in the execution of the program and if time allows, to produce additional work of their own initiative.
