Managing finances is critical to any business including tourism businesses and is central to evaluating the challenges and opportunities a tourism business may experience. To provide the basis for this understanding, this unit outlines the principles and practices of financial management in tourism businesses, including providing an understanding of profit and loss and balance sheet statements, cash flows, major sources of finance, scope and nature of the finance function and its role within business management. The unit aims to develop students' ability to understand, analyse and interpret financial statements and financial information, as well as identify financial problems. This unit introduces students to the major concepts and analytical tools used in the theory and practice of financial management within an Australian context and their application to tourism businesses.
