TES502 Introduction to English Linguistics

This unit introduces students to the structures of English language syntax and discourse, text/discourse analysis and how to apply these skills and knowledge to language teaching and learning contexts. Students learn the key structures of English through analysing texts and real examples of language in use. The unit equips students with a foundational understanding of how English works and the skills to analyse spoken, written and multimodal texts. Students apply these skills by undertaking text analyses on spoken and written texts for different communicative contexts and purposes. Students will complete the unit with a comprehensive understanding of the structures of English language and discourse, skills in text analysis and an understanding of how to apply these skills and knowledge to language learning and teaching contexts.
