This unit will focus on the pedagogy and practice of teaching History and Geography in a variety of educational settings. The unit will strengthen student skills and ability to think critically, creatively and constructively through geographic inquiry and historical investigation. Students will demonstrate their developing knowledge and understanding of the Australian National Curriculum for Geography and History. They will also develop an understanding and knowledge of the Early Years Learning Framework ( EYLF) Belonging, Being and Becoming which describes the principles, practices and outcomes that support and enhance young children's learning from birth to five years of age, as well as their transition to school. Students will then apply this knowledge to the design and development of a unit of work/project in Geography, History or integrated curriculum in a chosen educational setting. Pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning of History and Geography will be investigated through critique of current educational research. Weekly reflection and discussion will act as a medium for critical and creative thinking to promote deeper thinking and consideration of issues that can arise in the teaching of History and Geography. Finally, through collaborative group work, peer review and ongoing discussion, students will design and develop an inclusive learning sequence for effective Geography and History education in a chosen educational setting.
