The unit is designed to prepare preservice teachers to navigate the complexities of teaching Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) in a way that is inclusive, respectful, and promotes a deeper understanding of the rich cultural tapestry within Australian schools. Preservice teachers will focus on the pedagogy and practice of teaching HASS using the Australian Curriculum with a special focus on culturally responsive teaching and the inclusion of First Nations perspectives. By drawing on contemporary theory and evidence-based practice, this unit will strengthen preservice teachers' competency to think critically, creatively and constructively through inquiry-based pedagogies tailored to diverse classrooms. Preservice teachers will demonstrate their understanding of the Australian Curriculum: Humanities and Social Sciences and the implications for learning design and choice of disciplinary pedagogical approaches to planning, sequencing, modelling and scaffolding. This exploration includes understanding the significance of cultural safety in the classroom and the development of pedagogical approaches that respect and value the diversity of learners.
