ELA513 English as an Additional Language
This postgraduate unit will develop pre-service teachers' practical techniques for teaching English to students from a wide range of non-English-speaking backgrounds. The unit will also require pre-service teachers to research a range of theories that inform approaches on teaching English as a second language. Pre-service teachers will apply principles and methods for teaching English as an additional language or dialect to the design of teaching and learning activities. Pre-service teachers will also reflect critically on the effectiveness of teaching and learning activities, and promote cultural knowledge and interpersonal communication skills. As the relationship between identity, language and culture is a central theme in the unit, pre-service teachers will also be required to reflect critically on the ways in which their own language practices communicate social norms and cultural values.
