This unit is focused on the development of mathematics pedagogies by incorporating the contemporary approaches and strategies necessary to teach mathematics effectively. The unit engages preservice teachers with rich tasks, open-ended questions, substantive mathematical conversation and problem-solving skills. Preservice teachers will investigate the social dimensions of mathematics lessons through mathematical communication and key mathematical terminology to work in a differentiated learning environment with an emphasis on diversity of learners. Critical issues of mathematical pedagogy will be addressed through the imagined lesson scenarios, responding to misconceptions and scripted lesson play. The unit emphasizes to equip preservice teachers with the use of appropriate ICT and concrete material resources to teach mathematics effectively.
