This unit builds on the content knowledge in Mathematics Education 1 (EMA100) to develop a range of effective approaches to teaching and learning in primary school mathematics. The unit examines contemporary theoretical approaches to learning in mathematics, including the development and use of generative tasks, substantive mathematical conversation, and socio-mathematical norms to promote learning in a social constructivist environment. This theory is translated into practice through the development of open-ended questions, imagined lesson scenarios, responding to misconceptions and the use of relevant ICT and concrete material resources.
