ENG581 - Applied Heat and Mass Transfer

This unit deals with the analysis, design, implementation and evaluation of complex heat and mass transfer equipment and machinery. It explains in detail three modes of heat transfer - conduction, convection and radiation and it also covers underlying principles of diffusion mass transfer. Particular attention is given to the use of numerical methods in solving heat and mass transfer problems. Main topics covered in this unit are one and two dimensional steady state heat conduction; transient conduction; forced convective heat and mass transfer in external and internal flows; free convection, radiation and design of heat exchange equipment. The students will have the opportunity to build numerical models, critically evaluate different design methods and apply integrated knowledge to practical situations.
