In this unit students will investigate how midwives' partner with women in a range of countries, across the interface between the community and the hospital: in any setting, including the home, the community, hospitals, or in any other maternity service. Students will be introduced to the roles of key global organisations, including the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM). Concepts such as respectful care, the effects on maternity service provision and the context of international midwifery practice in culturally and income diverse countries will be explored. This unit enables the midwifery student to explore the issues and dilemmas faced by women and midwives in the global context. The student investigates the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the midwife's role in working toward achieving them. Students have the option of attending an overseas Professional Experience Placement (PEP) while studying this unit.
