The unit provides knowledge and skills that allow social work practitioners to identify and explain how social research is conducted, to distinguish between what works and what does not. It develops student's awareness of the very wide range of research methods and practices available, and the unique value and limitations of each. Further, it provides students the skills on how to choose an area of research interest identifying the theoretical and methodological frameworks that underpin research design in social work practice.
One of the specific requirements to be eligible to practice as a social worker is the ability to utilise the knowledge base in a critical manner so as to design simple, ethically based research studies to the field of social work practice and knowledge base.
