How does the mass media reflect back to us ideas about our culture and society? Can it be understood as a benevolent force helping to generate social change, or is it a disturbing mediator of our tastes, ideas and values? This unit provides students with theories and approaches for understanding the contemporary public media sphere. Drawing from the interdisciplinary fields of social science and cultural studies, this unit would also be of interest to students of sociology, politics, literary studies and history.
