This unit provides a comprehensive introduction to current approaches to emergency and disaster management in the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia and New Zealand. Students are introduced to the theoretical definitions of risk, resilience, disaster and emergency, types of disasters and risk governance frameworks, (including technical classifications) and an overview of appropriate monitoring and assessment of hazard, risk and vulnerability. Critical analysis of regional assessments, supported by existing expertise related to environmental, climate change and demographic vulnerabilities, provides a contextual overview for students to apply in professional practice.
