This unit examines contemporary issues relevant to educators and professionals working with young children in early childhood care and education settings. These current issues will form the basis for discussion for students to analyse and critically consider topics that confront early childhood professionals today. This unit encourages students to develop their skills in critical analysis as they reflect on historical and contemporary practices in early childhood education. Various discourses of childhood will be presented. Play is examined as a medium for discovery and learning in socio-political and community contexts. Students will have opportunities to identify their own beliefs within ethical and legislative environments that govern current early childhood practice and procedures.
