The aim of this unit is to explore the content and pedagogy of the learning area Health and Physical Education (HPE) which includes movement and health for children from pre-school through to primary levels. It focuses on the understanding and use of developmentally effective practices in teaching and integrating movement, physical activity, and health awareness. Curricular content, development of hands-on learning experiences, and integration of content area standards are explored.
In this unit, students will learn to construct understanding and create a meaningful grounding for the teaching of health and physical education. To facilitate this process the unit will use a range of current texts and web-based resources that present models and resources related to the teaching of HPE. These include Graham's 16 pedagogies, the Australian Sports Commission's Games Sense, Disability Education Program approach, and relevant websites such as the The Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER) site.
