This unit is focused on literacy and literacy capability teaching for the early learning and development of writing from Year Foundation to Year 2 in primary school. It foregrounds the integration of writing, reading, viewing and speaking to comprehend and compose meanings in whole texts, via engagements with literature in English, and texts typically used for learning in all other subjects of the Australian Curriculum. Theories, models, frameworks, and scholarly studies of contemporary literacy education are critically evaluated, to inform and align teaching and learning practice and assessment of and for learning. Approaches will consider responsive literacy teaching to develop fluent accurate text writing processes to maintain and modify meanings, by applying contextual, semantic, grammatical and phonic knowledge. Research evidence of effective models of literacy teaching and learning is reviewed, for designing explicit, systematic and scaffolded teaching that supports a diversity of literacy learners as writers.
