In this postgraduate unit, pre-service teachers will be introduced to multiple pedagogical approaches that inform the selection, reading, and close analysis of children's literature in primary classroom contexts. Practical strategies for selecting, responding to and producing literature will be explored in relation to the teaching, assessment and reporting requirements of the Australian English curriculum: this includes making explicit connections across the language, literature and literacy strands. Pre-service teachers will also have the opportunity to collaborate with peers to develop a rich portfolio of texts and activities as you explore the features and pedagogical affordance of quality literature for classroom use. Pre-service teachers will explore representations of children and childhood across a range of texts, share ideas for engaging students as readers and writers and make connections to the Australian Curriculum: English and Early Years Learning Framework. Collaborative activities also provide an opportunity for you to review your knowledge of literary techniques and explore the power of narratives to shape understandings of identity and belonging.
