This unit develops the mathematical content knowledge required to become an excellent teacher of mathematics in the primary years. It develops a deep and connected mathematical knowledge and the capacity to think and work like a mathematician, as well as building positive attitudes towards the learning of mathematics. It is built around the structure and philosophy of the Australian Curriculum in Mathematics, which has three content strands (the nouns - number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability) and four proficiency strands (the verbs - fluency, understanding, problem solving, and reasoning). The content areas are explored progressively from foundational concepts.
