EMA542 - Primary Mathematics Education 2

This unit develops the pedagogical content knowledge and strategies required to teach the mathematical topic strands of measurement, space, statistics, and probability throughout the primary years F-6. Key topics are explored progressively from foundational concepts based on evidence-based learning progressions. Preservice teachers will critically review uses of appropriate models, representations and resources, including ICT, to support learning in measurement, space, statistics and probability. Typical misconceptions are explored, how to address them and how to extend students critical numeracy. They will learn to use strategies to differentiate mathematics teaching that are responsive to diverse and specific learning needs. Preservice teachers will use Australian curriculum documents to inform the planning of teaching activities including rich tasks, group work, and the use of appropriate ICT tools that support the development of mathematical understanding, reasoning and problem solving. They will design tasks to assess learning and demonstrate the capacity to interpret assessment data to evaluate learning, inform teaching practice and to report on student achievement.
