This unit provides a broad introductory overview of the underpinning principles of introductory chemistry, materials and economics which are useful for all engineers. It introduces the fundamental concepts such as the role of chemical processing, material and energy balances on reactive and non-reactive processes, heat and mass transfer and fluid flow. Using a case study approach, students explore these concepts and discuss the related issues of ethics, health and safety, risk and reliability, and sustainability.
