ENG305 Safety, Risk and Reliability

The issues of safety, OH&S, reliable designs and what constitutes acceptable risk are central to any practical application of engineering. These issues are explored, using examples of both good and poor engineering practice, covering topics such as:

  • lifecycle analysis, including CDIO (Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate)
  • workplace regulations
  • industrial hygiene, including identification, evaluation and control, MSDS
  • fires and explosions
  • work permit systems
  • risk and reliability assessment
  • inherently safe process design
  • HAZOP, HAZID and HAZAN
  • sustainability, including environmental assessment processes
  • ethics

This unit is reliant on on-line materials. Students must have reliable access to the internet. Access to high-speed broadband is highly recommended. Students studying in external mode must have access to a scanner to submit assessment items.
