ETL503 - Understanding Learner Development

This unit examines connection between the developing brain and learning processes, drawing on theoretical frameworks and empirical research to enhance student engagement across emotional, physical, and social dimensions. Pedagogical approaches that are responsive to the needs of diverse learners, the role of parents in the educative process, and how students can be engaged explicitly in learning including the contemporary use of technologies are explored. This unit provides an in-depth analysis of the brain development from early childhood through to young adulthood, focusing on the evolution of executive functions and their implications for pedagogical strategies. It challenges common educational neuromyths, presenting research-based evidence to advocate for effective teaching practices that align with our contemporary understanding of brain function, memory, and cognitive overload.
