FUN505 Therapeutic Parenting and Filial Therapy
This unit will teach students how to actively engage parents as therapeutic agents with working with their children in a counselling setting. Filial Therapy encompasses the assumption that parents know their child better than any professional ever could. Therefore teaching parent therapeutic skills when working with their child within a therapeutic parenting model will have longer lasting effects on their relationship and the child's development. In this unit, 'parent' can also be a carer, teacher, guardian or sibling.
Students will learn a variety of parenting approaches that will build a theoretically integrative approach drawing heavily from psychosocial and cultural perspectives. Current literature on child brain development will be a large influencing theme in this unit. Additionally students will get exposure to parenting theories, essential features of Filial Therapy, parenting issues, developmental concerns, resistance and other circumstances that affect the child-parent relationship.
This unit targets professionals from a range of disciplines. The aim of this unit is to teach skills that can be incorporated in their already known skillset.
