HEA590 - Foundations of Child and Family Health Professional Practice

This unit will prepare students for the specialist role of the child and family health care practitioner in contemporary Australia. This foundational unit will introduce students to contemporary child health and family practitioner practice and introduce students to the public care philosophy and public health principles.
Students will reflect on the diversity of family structures within Australian society and how family's transition to parenthood, the importance of a child's early years, and the impact of the parent-child attachment relationship. Students will develop knowledge of the physical and psychosocial development for children aged 0-5 years, normal child behaviour, and the importance of play, sleep and settling. Finally, students will orientate to their new scope of practice and incorporate professional accountability and advocacy for the children and families into their existing professional practice behaviour.
This unit requires 100 hours of professional placement within a child health setting.
