IAS163 Linguistics for Indigenous Languages 1

This unit introduces students to the scientific study of language. Through a focus on Australia's Indigenous languages, students will be able to engage in the study of language through linguistics, and develop an introductory understanding of the practical and theoretical aspects of linguistics and how languages work. The central concepts covered are; sound production and sound systems, parts of speech, grammatical relations in words and sentences, and meaning. Students will examine a range of linguistic data and consider how this information is used to create and analyse meaning in language.
