IAS165 Language in Society

It is important to understand languages as part of the social and cultural life worlds of the speakers. In this unit students will engage with the practical, theoretical and research aspects of the broad and varied field of sociolinguistics in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and within the wider community. The unit will provide a solid knowledge of language varieties and language communities, with a particular focus on Indigenous language situations. The ethnography of speaking and language choice in Indigenous communities forms a crucial part of the unit.
