IAS265 - Meaning in Language: Semantics
Semantics is the branch of linguistics that asks how we can use language to express things about the real world, and how linguistic expressions can reflect people's thoughts. In this unit, students will study semantics in order to distinguish the many different kinds of meaning manifested in language, and how meaning is creatively manipulated through language. With a focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language systems of classification, students will examine how language reflects different views of the world, and how semantics change over time as local circumstances and values change.
