This unit uses research skills students develop in the study of history to examine major events and themes in the 20th century history of the eleven countries of modern South-east Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. Some of the topics include nationalist and revolutionary movements, the effects of Japanese occupation during the Second World War, and the creation of new independent states post-war (in some cases, several decades later).
