This unit introduces students to a topic in one genre of popular literature (be it science fiction, crime novels, comic books, horror stories, etc.). The unit examines the history of this form of popular writing, teaching students to analyse both themes and styles, unique to a genre that often does not receive much scholarly attention from critics within the academy. Students learn how to conduct academic research and produce critical analysis in response to these works of creativity, in order to prepare students for the study of more canonical, narrative literature in the field.
