LWA120 - Law in Context
This unit investigates how law operates in our social, economic, political and global environment. Law students and lawyers usually focus on the 'black letter' of the law, but the words on the page do not always tell us all that we need to know to understand what the rule is and why it operates the way it does. We also tend to see law as 'neutral' from other aspects of social life such as politics, which is often not the case. This course critically examines theories on how the law is conceived and formulated as well as how it embodies other pragmatic, social, economic, and normative principles or bias.
