LWA298 Legal Clinic

This is a placement unit for students to gain legal skills and work experience within external legal centres focused on social justice. This includes engagement with legal profession, community benefit organisations, and the community at large. Throughout the unit, students will gain and develop legal skills particularly in relation to communication, legal drafting and legal research; gain real world experience of a law practice and develop an increased understanding of what community lawyers do (in the context of a community legal centre, NGO or pro bono work). Students can participation in all aspects of the placement either in person or virtually. This unit is available to both internal and external students, but places are limited.

At the completion of the unit students will have gained a better understanding of their own personal motivation for studying law, particularly environmental law, human rights law and criminal law, and the ability to identify and critically assess the Northern Territory's environmental laws, migration laws and Indigenous legal issues

Applications are to be made to the unit coordinator prior to enrolment. Students need to submit an application addressing skills, area of interest based on the three streams offered. Students will be assigned to the stream that best accommodates their interests and needs of the host organisations. If their application is successful students will be manually enrolled in this unit. Students must complete an HE01 manual enrolment application form.
