LWZ114 Criminal Law
This unit, which covers the Priestly 11 requirements, examines material relating to substantive and procedural aspects of criminal law. It include an introduction to criminal law and criminal codes, criminal offences, arrest, bail and police powers, criminal responsibility, murder and manslaughter, offences against the person, sexual offences, property offences, children and the law, sentencing. Topics examined by this unit include:
- The definition of crime
- Elements of crime
- Aims of the criminal law
- Homicide and defences
- Non-fatal offences against the person and defences
- Offences against property
- Sexual offences - selected topics chosen from: attempts, participation in crime, drunkenness, mistake, strict responsibility
- Elements of criminal procedure - selected topics chosen from: classification of offences, process to compel appearance, bail, preliminary examination
This unit will include a comparative transnational and/or international element, where appropriate.
