MID101 Introduction to Midwifery Practice

This unit examines the issues influencing Australian midwifery practice. Students are exposed to fundamental frameworks for evidence-informed, culturally safe and appropriate midwifery care specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait and other Australians. Students explore the role of the midwife in the context of Australia's health system and are introduced to key concepts in midwifery including: primary health care, cultural safety, partnership, informed choice, advocacy, woman-centred care.

This unit has a five day on campus compulsory Clinical Teaching Block followed by two weeks of clinical practice where the student is 'buddied' with a midwife who works primarily in the community.
