This unit introduces students to the core values, philosophy, principles legislation, and ethics that underpin CDU midwifery and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwife Standards for Practice. Building on the history of midwifery, the future of midwifery and its role in transforming safe maternity care for women is explored and the Framework for Quality Maternal and Newborn Care is outlined. Students will be introduced to the concept of cultural competency. Students will explore the term woman-centred care and understand the importance of and rationale for using woman-centred language in midwifery communication. Students will acknowledge that by definition, woman-centred language includes any person / community who the woman herself identifies as being important to her.
