MLS501 - Immunohaematology
Immunohaematology concerns the principles of transfusion medicine and blood banking. This unit will prepare students to work in blood bank and transfusion services. Students will gain an integrated understanding of the blood group antigen systems, the clinical significance of antibodies directed against these antigens and their role in transfusion related disorders, such as adverse transfusion events and haemolytic disease. Emphasis is placed on key aspects of blood banking and transfusion, including compatibility testing, donor selection and testing, blood product preparation, patient blood management, and regulatory requirements and standards. The study of immunohaematology will provide students with the knowledge and practical skills to competently perform blood grouping, antibody screening and identification, crossmatching and investigations of transfusion reactions.
