NUR138 - Preparation for Nursing Practice 1

This unit focuses on supporting students to develop knowledge and skills that underpin safe nursing care. Students will be exposed to conducting and accurately documenting comprehensive health assessments in a simulated clinical setting across the lifespan. Students will engage case-based learning, and during simulation bring their theory into practice. Emphasis will be placed on effective communication within multidisciplinary teams, applying National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards, and utilising the Clinical Reasoning Cycle in simulated scenarios. Through these activities, students will enhance their ability to deliver holistic nursing care, ensuring adherence to evidence-based practice and Registered Nurse Standards for Practice.

Students will be introduced to the scope of the registered nurse in supporting person-centred care through promotion of nutrition, hygiene, skin integrity, conducting physical assessments including vital signs, and safe medication management principles. By the end of this unit, students will be prepared to attend their first clinical placement and will have meet professional responsibility through preparation of pre-placement compliance documents.

A key component of this unit is the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical application in a simulated clinical environment. The 32-hour simulation block (hurdle) will prepare students for the subsequent clinical placement (NUR134) by providing hands-on experience in managing patient care in a simulated environment.
